about

There aren’t many jazz standards with a history that goes back as far as St. James Infirmary’s. The original version referred to the hospital that King Henry VIII founded in 1530 in London to house fourteen leprous maiden sisters. Considering the fact that in New Orleans there was a St. James Infirmary too, this might have influenced Louis Armstrong’s decision to record the piece back in 1928. On his recording – the first ever – he has his own idiosyncratic version of the lyrics, while maintaining the basic storyline of a man seeing the cold body of his loved one in a mortuary. To this day, New Orleans music is impossible to imagine without this classic.
